Microdermabrasion
What
is microdermabrasion???
The skin is made up of many different layers of cells. The outer most layer of
the skin is called the stratum corneum. Understandably, this outer layer of skin
cells gets the most damage because it is exposed to the environment.
Microdermabrasion refers to the use of micronized (tiny) crystals derived from
the mineral corundum to perform a safe peeling of the skin. Through a
well-controlled buffing process, these corundum crystals resurface the skin by
removing this upper layer of skin. At the same time, the microdermabrasion hand
piece contains a vacuum that sweeps up both the crystals and the cells of the
upper layer of skin. Through the use of this unique resurfacing and exfoliation
technology, we are now able to achieve unprecedented success in the treatment of
acne as well as being able to help erase the telltale signs of aging of the skin
including fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration and uneven texture. Along with
the exfoliation of the skin, the microdermabrasion technique stimulates the
production of collagen and elastin which results in firmer and more youthful
looking skin. Unlike laser resurfacing or chemical peels, this procedure is not
traumatic and therefore there is no downtime to allow for healing and recovery.
What skin conditions
might be improved by microdermabrasion?
Wrinkles and fine lines, aging skin, dull skin, rough texture skin, acne,
irregular pigmentation, brown spots, mild scarring, and scaly skin lesions also
called keratoses.
What results can I
expect and how soon?
After the first treatment the skin will have a fresh glow and your skin becomes
radiant. With follow up treatments many patients report that their skin seems to
be softer, smoother and younger looking. Improvement continues throughout
the treatment program.
What else will I need in
addition to the microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a safe, non-surgical, comprehensive and progressive
approach to skin care. Because microdermabrasion deprives the skin of moisture,
proper skin care both before and after the microdermabrasion treatment is
essential. Therefore, an appropriate cleanser and moisturizer is essential for
the best results.
How long do the
treatments take?
The microdermabrasion treatments last approximately 30 minutes.
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion over other procedures?
Is the microdermabrasion
technique safe for all skin types and colors?
YES!!!!!!
Have there been any reported side effects?
Mild excoriations have been reported in patients with severely damaged skin following a microdermabrasion treatment which have lasted a few days. Since only the outer layer of skin is been removed by microdermabrasion, no significant skin problems should be anticipated. In very rare cases, scarring has been reported.
What precautions are
necessary prior to the microdermabrasion treatment?
For two weeks prior to the microdermabrasion treatment, patients are requested
to refrain from having a chemical peel, tanning, having a wax treatment and
getting collagen injections. Additionally, microdermabrasion is not recommended
for pregnant patients.
How often will I get a
microdermabrasion treatment?
The microdermabrasion treatments are repeated every seven to ten days for up to
12 treatments depending upon the size, depth and type of skin problem of the
affected area. Additionally monthly maintenance treatments are recommended.
Can I go back to work
after a microdermabrasion treatment?
YES!!!!! . A few patients do notice their skin feeling tight immediately after
the treatment as if the skin has been exposed to the sun or wind. You might
experience a slight dryness of the skin depending upon your skin type. An
effective moisturizer is applied after the treatment to prevent this drying of
the skin. The skin might appear slightly red for the remainder of the day.
Additionally, the patient is asked to refrain from using makeup on the day of
the treatment to give the skin chance to breathe and regenerate itself.
Why is microdermabrasion
called the "lunchtime face lift"?
Because microdermabrasion requires no anesthesia and leaves the skin slightly
flushed for just a few hours the nickname "lunchtime face lift" has
been coined by patients because of its quick recovery time. Microdermabrasion is
an excellent option for people who cannot take time off from work for the deeper
chemical peels or laser therapy treatments.
Is microdermabrasion
covered by insurance?
Yes. This depends upon your specific skin condition and the reimbursable
conditions of your particular insurance plan.
Why choose the Brandeis
Medical Center for microdermabrasion?
We use an effective microdermabrasion machine to ensure that your
treatments will yield the best results possible. Our aestheticians are
extremely knowledgeable and proficient with microdermabrasion. We use the
finest grade crystals available. These crystals are uniform in size and shape
and therefore yield the best results. Many salons use low-grade crystals which
are uneven in size and can even contain potentially dangerous silica which can
result in actually damaging the skin. The microdermabrasion treatment that
you'll receive at the Brandeis Medical Center will yield far superior results
especially with complicated and sensitive skin conditions.
Who should you NOT CHOOSE?
Are there any skin
conditions that should not be treated by microdermabrasion?
Undiagnosed skin lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, skin cancer, unstable
diabetes and active rosacea
